Lak Lake is the is one of the largest natural freshwater lake of Vietnam. Vast, quiet and fringed by rolling hills, the lake is home to the Mnong people. Located 55km south of Buon Ma Thuot, in Dak Lak province, on the road to Da Lat, Lak Lake is a fabulous daytrip. This unique eco-tourism attraction remains relatively undeveloped and unknown to tourists. On the side of the lake, there are Jun village, Mo Lieng village (the oldest and still unspoiled village) and Le village. Enjoy visiting them during your travel to Lak Lake.
Five buses join Lien Son from Dalat (4 hours, 110,000 VND) or Buon Ma Thuot (1 hour, 30,000 VND). Have a 15-minute walk from Lien Son to arrive in Jun village, located on the banks of Lak Lake. A local bus (No 12) also hourly leaves Buon Ma Thuot to Lien Son (1 hour, 24,000 VND). Another option is renting motorbikes in hotels in Buon Ma Thuot.

Buon Le village . Enjoy spending an afternoon in this Mnong village where locals are living very traditional lives. They are not accustomed to occidental tourists and welcomed us very warmly. Take interest to their daily chores: make rice wine, sort snails collected in the lake to sell them at the market, cook a river snake. They would enjoy share with you their lifestyle.
Buon Ma Thuot . The capital of Dak Lak province owes its dynamic growth to coffee production. Many travelers make a stop in the Vietnamese capital of the coffee to visit the surroundings:
- Yok Don National Park – the biggest most biodiverse protected area in Vietnam
- Gia Long, Dray Nur and Dray Sap waterfalls
- Ban Don Village – notable for its tribal architecture
During your travel to Lak Lake, take time to visit the Dak Lak Province Museum in Buon Ma Thuot and check out the Ethnography Exhibit where you could learn a lot about the history, culture and traditions of hill tribes of the province.
On the road from Buon Ma Thuot to Lak Lake, see the ruins of a French colonial era catholic church, which is located 30 kilometers from the city, just before crossing the bridge over the Krong Ana River. Few kilometers further, stop at the stone marker “H4/32” and take a dirt path to Elephant Rock. This hill offers a beautiful panorama on the valley full of wet rice paddies.

. Many homestays organize boat trips on traditional wooden barks on Lak Lake for travelers. Enjoy doing so at sunrise or sunset, when the light makes the surface of water shining. The show would be an unforgettable moment of your travel to Lak Lake.

Duc Mai Coffee Agency organises a waterfall trek on demand. A seven-kilometer drive starts a two-hour challenging hike in the jungle. You could also swim in the falls.

. On one of the lake’s fishing villages, learn from locals who will help you know more about the fauna and flora of the area. The trips are from 4:30pm and 6:00pm, on demand of travelers to their homestay.

Unfortunately, all hotels and tourist agencies of the area offer elephant rides. Asian tourists love them. We advise you not to do so even if locals would tell you that their elephants are well treated.

. Mr. Duc and his children who speak English serve travelers to Lak Lake delicious local specialties to share. There is no menu, you simply ask what you want.

There are not many restaurants, but many street food stalls along the main road in nearby Lien Son.

. Mr. Duc also proposes you to spend a night in his place. You could enjoy spending a night on a mattress, with only a blanket and mosquito net in a traditional longhouse.

There are different homestays in Buon Jun village, just walk around and arrange it on the stop. They usually do not speak English very well, but they easily understand you.

Van Long Motel.
If you are looking for more conventional accommodation. Located on the banks ok Lak Lake, this is the most comfortable accommodation in the area. The rooms are large and clean, some offer a lake view. The hotel also offers VTT to rent.
