The Gili Islands are three islands in Indonesia:
- Gili Trawangan
- Gili Air
- Gili Meno
They are located between Bali and Lombok. These three idyllic islands with white sand and turquoise water are the turtle capital of the world. In this paradise, cars and scooter are very rare. Each island is different: Gili Trawangan is the largest, housing many accommodations, restaurants and small shops; Gili Air has the strongest local character; and Gili Meno is the least developed. The only way to get to the islands is by boat from Bali, Nusa Lembongan and Lombok.
What to do?
Activities
- Snorkeling
You can snorkel directly from the beaches or with a boat. The seabed is full of poisons, turtles, leopard rays and corals...this is the inevitable activity here!
- Nightlife
If you want to go out at night, it’s better to be at Gili Trawangan. The biggest parties are always Monday at Blue Marlin, Friday at Rudy’s. Another great bar is the Sama-Sama, where you will discover well-known Indonesian bands playing live Reggae music.
- Landscapes
In Gili Trawangan, the viewpoint allows to have a superb view of Lombok and Mount Rinjani, Bali and Mount Agung as well as the other Gili Islands.
- Horseback riding
You can take a nice break by horseback riding along the beach.
- Night market
Every day at 6pm on the island of Gili Trawangan in front of the boat dock you will attend the night market. You will find a wide range of specialties including rice and noodles, vegetables, seafood and fish. Don’t forget to try the Nasi Campur which is a typical Indonesian dish!
- “Stick Fighting” tournaments
It is called a “Presean” in the Sasak language (the Sasak are the ethnic group that makes up the majority of the population of Lombok) and takes place on Sunday afternoons on the market square.
- Turtle Sanctuary
In Gili Meno, the sanctuary is there to protect turtle eggs from other wild animals. They are collected and incubated at the Bolong Turtle Sanctuary to be raised in small pools and released 8 months later on the beach.
- Birds' Park
In Gili Meno, it is home to several different species such as parrots, pelicans, small eagles and pheasants.
